Being a mom & staying creative – How to find space for yourself
Sometimes it feels like life is moving in a completely new rhythm after the birth, doesn't it? You're a mom now - and that's wonderful. But there's also this quiet feeling that a part of you needs space. Space to be yourself. Space for creativity.
I know this all too well. After the birth of my daughter, my life was full of love, but also full of to-do lists, lack of sleep and this feeling that I hardly had any time for myself. And it was during this time that I realized how important it is to create this space for myself anyway. Not to be perfect, but to get back to myself.
Here are a few thoughts and tips that helped me get back to my creativity – and maybe they will inspire you too.
Why Creativity is so Important as a Mom
Creativity is not just paint on canvas. It is a feeling of freedom, a moment just for you. As moms in particular, we tend to put ourselves last. But creativity can be more than a luxury - it can help you relieve stress, process emotions and feel whole again as a woman.
My personal path back to the studio
After the birth of my daughter, my studio was almost deserted for a few months. Between diapers, breastfeeding and mental overload, I felt like a different version of myself. But at some point I realized: art was always my expression. My way of connecting with the world.
So I started to create little creative islands for myself. Not perfect. Not every day. Just moments in which I could feel myself again. As often as possible.
Three ways to stay creative despite being a mom
1. Create creative micro-moments
You don't need to have hours to be creative. Often, 10 minutes is enough - over your morning coffee, while the baby is sleeping, or even with your child.
👉 Ideas:
- Keep a small sketchbook
- Writing morning pages (just write down 3 pages of thoughts)
- Trying out colors on a sheet of paper without a goal
- doodling
2. Be creative with your child
Why not get creative together? Children are masters of free creativity. Let yourself be inspired, without the pressure of expectations. Of course, that's not possible with a baby, but I spent some lovely time in the studio with my eldest daughter and had a lot of fun. She now wants to be an artist, or a veterinarian.
👉 Ideas:
- Finger paints on paper – messing around together
- Collecting natural materials and creating collages
- Creating a mural for the children's room together
- Simply put acrylic paints, a canvas, brushes and rollers and let the child try it out for themselves
3. Let go of perfectionism
Art doesn't have to be perfect. Your time is limited, and that's okay. It's about the process, not the result.
👉 Affirmation for you:
"I am enough. My art is enough."
Why Art is also Self-Care
Art is more than just pretty colors. It can be a mirror of your emotions. A way to get back in touch with yourself.
Every time I paint, I feel more like myself . That's exactly what I want to convey to you with my artwork - moments of calm, strength and expression.
Conclusion: Your creativity counts – even now!
You don't have to do everything perfectly. But you can make room for yourself - for yourself, for your art, for what makes you who you are. It's not easy, but I practice every day to create islands in my everyday life, because only an emotionally stable mother can be a great mom.
